From Tech Leadership to CBT Coaching: My 30-Year Journey
From Code to Coaching
Remember when websites were built with tables and frames? That’s where my career began—as a self-taught developer diving headfirst into the world of IT. For 30 years, I climbed the ladder from developer to team leader, scrum master, and even leadership positions at a major UK consultancy and a US tech startup. It was a fantastic ride!
But alongside the code, my original passion simmered—psychology. Fast-forward and I’m thrilled to be back in this space, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people like you conquer challenges and thrive.
The Power of CBT
Why CBT? Because it’s been a game-changer for me. This powerful approach, pioneered by David Burns (author of the life-changing “Feeling Good”), showed me how our thoughts directly impact our emotions. Finding his list of cognitive distortions to help identify and challenge negative thought patterns felt like discovering a secret code.
Here’s what CBT helped me with:
- Managing tough times: Supported loved ones through mental health challenges and built resilience in the process.
- Overcoming anxiety: Conquered social anxiety and used CBT techniques to meet my wife and later to public speaking, eventually speaking at international conferences.
- Breaking bad habits: Kicked the “half-priced bun” habit and embraced healthy practices for overall well-being.
- Defeating procrastination: Conquered the “I’ll do it tomorrow” monster.
- Taming perfectionism: Dealt with these both academically and professionally.
- Building better relationships: Used CBT to improve communication and navigate challenging work dynamics.
Paying It Forward
It wasn’t always smooth sailing – there were setbacks, of course. But the beauty of CBT is that it equips you with tools for the long haul.
Now, I’m passionate about paying it forward. I’ve spent hundreds of hours volunteering with Shout UK, the crisis text lines, and Cruse Bereavement Support, and I am eager to help you, too!
